This month I’m dialling in to Finland and catching up with the wonderful Sarah Ajlan from our Sales Development team.
Read about Sarah’s experience with Occtoo, and how her passion for adventure and love of the Nordics played a big part in her decision to join the team. 🚀
Hey Sarah, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?
I’m curious, creative, and driven. I’m also probably the clumsiest person my friends know. I have several years’ experience within sales, right from being a tour guide in cognac houses, a commercial assistant in a wood shop, to a business developer. I’ve always enjoyed meeting new people from different backgrounds. For me, working in sales means sharing with others.
How did you hear about Occtoo?
I found Occtoo via LinkedIn. I liked the way the job was advertised – it was different.
What made you apply for your job?
I’m crazy about the Nordics. Sweden is the first Nordic country I moved to, and it has a special place in my heart. Applying for my role at Occtoo meant keeping a strong connection with Sweden, whilst also allowing me to stay in Finland, which, for me, is another magical place to live in.
Working for a software company was also important for me - I liked my previous role and I intend to keep on growing within the tech sector.
How would you describe the culture and work-life of Occtoo?
Each of us is equally valued. I appreciate the possibility to have an open conversation, listen to my teammates, and be heard. Oscar (our COO) always encourages us to challenge the team and become a better version of ourselves. I think it’s a great way to grow! I view the people I work with, not just as coworkers, but as friends - it is possible here. 😀
Was this your first experience working remote?
I worked once a week at my previous job, so I had the first taste several years ago. Also, I was a student when the pandemic started, so like everywhere else, we had to follow our lectures and take our exams online.
Do you take advantage of the flexible working?
Absolutely! Who wouldn’t? Having the possibility to work from anywhere is a luxury. It allows me to travel whenever I feel like it, take a break and go for a run when I want, or sit on my sofa wearing soft pants while working.
You’ve lived in a few different countries. Tell us what you like about living in different places and how you adapt
My mother and father are respectively from France and Saudi Arabia. I lived and worked most of my life in the former, several years in the latter. I believe that coming from two radically different cultures has helped me to quickly adapt to new ones and helps me to always keep an open mind. At 18, I had the opportunity to work for a year as an Au pair in Australia and it was invaluable for the experience it gave me. Before moving to Sweden, I read many, many, many books, and watched a few documentaries about the country and its culture, I also studied a bit of the language.
Is there a true team connection with colleagues that you only see via a Teams meeting?
Definitely. We call each other every day, mostly for work but also to chat about other stuff.
What would your advice be to anyone who is considering switching to remote work?
There are many benefits to working remotely. Working from home saves time, it is stress-free from transportations, and therefore greener. It allows us to spend more time with our family.
